Xbox 360’s Too Human: Rewards and Customization

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Silicon Knights’ Too Human revels in rewarding you at every conceivable turn. Each minute of play brings you tangibly closer to your next level and loot drops nearly without reprieve from every crate, obelisk, and enemy you vanquish.

If the rewards are plentiful, the customization options in Too Human are equally outstanding. No character looks or plays quite the same. From your armor and weapons of choice all the way to the Runes and Charms you bear and even the color of your gear, your Baldur is very much your own.

There’s really only one question. What kind of Baldur will you be?

Skill Tree - While your choice of class helps define how you approach the game, each class has their own unique skill tree to help you further specialize your skill set.

For example, one side of the Bio Engineer skill tree focuses on one-handed weapons, group-heals and a Battle Cry that wipes out negative effects, increases resistances, and amps up your basic offensive stats. Meanwhile, the other side of the tree relies more on crowd control, using skills like Skuld’s Embrace, which grants you a chance to turn enemies against one another, and Wrack of the Lightning Mine, disabling enemies for a short duration.

Whatever the class, you must choose among three distinct branches of your skill tree. But Too Human doesn’t permanently lock you into that path. You can choose to “respec” your skill tree at any time for what amounts to a fairly modest cost. For example, at level 12 I have 30,675 Bounty, and the cost for reapplying my skill points is just 1,000 Bounty.

There’s also opportunity to access a second skill tree, but discussing that further would spoil part of the story, so I’ll let that be.

Runes - Nearly every weapon or piece of armor you discover has its own unique characteristics, but many also contain empty Rune slots for further customization. The Runes themselves offer powers as varied as the game’s classes, skill trees, and mechanics. Some focus on basic weapon damage while others may increase one of your attributes (say, adding 10% to dexterity), reduce the cooldown on your abilities, or extend the length of time you can juggle an enemy, to name just a few.

For those of you that fear clashing colors, you can also buy color-based Runes to mix and match your armor’s color scheme to fit your own sense of Aesir fashion.

Charms - Both more potent and rare than Runes, Charms require more than just collecting to make use of their power. For example, the Rupturing Influence Charm introduces a chance to create a small explosion during battle. To use it though, you need to first kill three hundred enemies as well as apply three different Rune types to power the Charm.

Blueprints - Early on, your outfit will consist of a hodge-podge of gear from a mishmash of sources, but for the truly epic armor sets and legendary weapons, you must turn to Blueprints. Though there’s always a chance you’ll uncover a rare Blueprint off an ordinary monster, you’re more apt to discover these more powerful items from bosses, larger monsters, or even secret rooms.

Just finding the Blueprint isn’t enough. They require hefty Bounty deposits in order to craft and use them, so you must carefully consider the investment versus reward.

Midgard Wares - Your best bet for tracking down exceptional items may be on the battlefield, but the Aesir of Midgard can outfit you with armor, weapons, runes, and even special cybernetic implants. Don’t discount these vendors even later in the game. You might be surprised at what items they have for sale.

Trade Time - While you can Salvage any item you choose to for Bounty, don’t forget that you can trade items online when playing cooperatively on Xbox LIVE®. You’ll almost certainly find a better value for rarer items bartering with the community than if you simply Salvaged them. This is particularly true of class-specific items and Blueprints, so don’t go selling off that rare purple gear just to make room in your inventory.

The sheer breadth of options for customizing Baldur’s powers and appearance is staggering, and it’s one of the game’s most remarkable accomplishments. Each piece of armor and every weapon are imbued with artistic beauty firmly rooted in the game’s Nordic style. And each item is appropriately balanced, requiring you to weigh each item’s various powers and statistics in order to outfit Baldur with the best gear that fits your chosen play style.

Sony PS3 Picking Up Steam: Xbox 360 loses its mojo

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is still a very popular games console but as it ages its becoming clear that the next-generation games console has some major weaknesses compared to the Sony Playstation 3.

When we look closer at Microsoft’s strategy for the Xbox 360 its clear that this needs addressing if the 360 is to get its mojo back. The Sony PS3 has been consistently been chipping away at the 360’s lead in both hardware and software sales in the US.

The PS3 looked like it had no chance when it launched thanks to the Xbox 360 having a hold on the next-gen gamer with better games, and a better online strategy. Microsoft also cornered much of the gaming market by taking some of the largest franchises.

The Xbox 360 has Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto, and now Final Fantasy! But the PlayStation 3 still has these games, and with Microsoft backing the wrong optical format (HD-DVD), how many discs will Fantasy XIII take up when it hits the Xbox 360?

Microsoft has some amazing racing franchises, but none of these compare to the power that Gran Turismo brings to the Playstation 3. Halo makes the 360 a system-seller, but MGS4 is still a PS3 exclusive. Gears of War 2 is an amazing game, but Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 look just as good in terms of online play, scale, and graphics.

Playstation’s Home could be the secret weapon that gives the PS3 an edge that it needs in online play. LittleBigPlanet is another point for the PS3, and its one of the most anticipated casual games ever.

If you live in the United States, then you will tend to focus on U.S. gaming sales but remember that video games are an international business. Microsoft has been ruling the U.S. gaming market, but is struggling in other markets. The Sony PS3 does good business in Europe and Japan, how can Microsoft improve in these markets?

We have seen sales spikes for the 360 in Japan and Europe, but this is when there is a launch of big-name titles, otherwise the 360 fails to impress. Microsoft depends on US sales.

Microsoft has one system that does well in one market. The 360 simply have to step it up outside of the United States.

Now Microsoft may have fixed the Red Ring of Death problem, but most gamers still do not trust the hardware. You hear about this in game stores, forums and even the casual gamer. Most gamers have had a 360 go back or know someone that has.

The hard drive of the PS3 is getting larger with each new system, and the real advantage is that anyone can swap out his or her drive for a larger one. Sony even suggests this, and supports the PS3 owner with DIY tutorials on the upgrade. Microsoft can’t begin to match this and with game downloads an increasing factor, more storage is needed.

While Xbox Live is better than Sony’s PSN, how much better is the question. The fact that Sony’s online offerings are free makes a big difference to many gamers. Why should you pay for online pay when you can get it free on the PS3?

Microsoft has no competition for the PSP-PS3 connection; consumers want to own both the Playstation 3 and Sony PSP thanks to so much cool functionality. You get a great media experience. Video sales and rentals work seamlessly with the PSP, and the Blu-ray drive adds more multimedia functions to create an amazing package.

How should Microsoft fix these issues? The problems are there and things are not getting better for Microsoft. The fact is, competition is much stronger now and this is a great thing for gamers.

Xbox 360 Water Cooling System: Lian Li PC-XB01 chassis

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

There are lots of solutions to the Xbox 360 RROD problem that many gamers have or will face, and the Xbox 360 Lian Li PC-XB01 chassis with an optional water cooling system is just one of them.

There is a 120mm exhaust fan at the rear of the XB01 to replace the original 2 x 70mm cooling fans, the 120mm fan can move the heat faster at a lower speed, with less noise.

Special sound insulation foam sheeting around the Optical drive reduces the mechanical noises from vibration of spinning disks. There are aluminum dust covers for the front connectors to protect the connector. The Optical drive has a spring loaded dust cover to keep the aesthetic appeal, while adding the professional polished look that Lian Li is renowned for.

The PC-XB01 has a 12cm fan, with high volume airflow running at 1500RPM. This airflow volume and fan speed keeps the airflow adequate to cool the components effectively, while still maintaining a low decibel level.

Xbox 360 optical drive has been relocated away from the main heat generating components, allowing more airflow across the graphics chipset. This is also convenient if the user wants to change the cooler, or install water-cooling.

Large aluminum air duct covers the Xbox 360 heatsink, allowing more cool air to flow through and extract the heat more efficiently.

The water tube openings at the rear of the case allow for user to upgrade to liquid cooling for the Xbox 360.

The XB01 has included two fan converters to allow for different versions of the Xbox 360. The wire brushed edges allow for safe handling of the chassis and the anodized finish lends an aesthetic appeal for the Xbox 360 unit

October 19 release of Rock Band 2 Xbox 360 Bundle

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Bad news for all you Xbox 360 gamers waiting on the Rock Band 2 Xbox 360 Bundle because news has it that it will not be released until October 19.

Harmonix has pushed the Rock Band 2 Xbox 360 Bundle edition back which is a major disappointment; this is funny because this was apparently the date for the standalone game shipping for all platforms.

It is true what the source says below that you could pick up the program normally a month before on September 14, but you have to spend more on the bundle rather than the game. Personally this is not my sort of game so I have no problems when the bundle comes out, but of course there are many of you gamers that will be a little annoyed.

There has been no reason given for the delay, but we guess they have a good reason, check out the official Rock Band store.

Are you disappointed of the late release?

Third-Party Game Confusion: Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

You got to love results of game sales, it seems that market companies and the brands themselves always get confused and can never agree who is right.

Today we see some confusion over third-party games sales and who sells the most. Is it the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360?

Nintendo made a claim that the Wii sells more third-party games than the Xbox 360, but now we hear that Microsoft claim the Xbox 360 is the real winner.

NPD sales figures have this to show: The Nintendo Wii has sold 33,394,311 third party games compared to the Xbox 360’s 67,929,999 third party game sales. If those results are right, it puts the 360 well ahead of the Wii.

So whom do we believe if we wanted to know who has sold the most third party games? It looks like things are never that clear with conflicting numbers like this. Read more Nintendo news here and Microsoft news here.
