Apple’s 3G iPhone firmware has been dissected

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

You got to love it when you hear a so-called rumor that comes from a “reliable source” and when you look for any name of the source, it cannot be found. This is just what is being said on Engadget.com today, they have said, “a private version of the 3G iPhone’s firmware has been dissected”. This is meant to show that the new Apple iPhone will not only support GPS but will also be compatible with international carriers thanks to Tri-band HSDPA (3G) support.

After the iPhone 2.0 firmware had apparently been dissected it was said to show these hardware features; Hooks for Global Locate Library (GLL), software that handles GPS related commands for the host processor, UMTS Power Saving - on or off, Internal build model number: n82ap (1st gen iPhone was model m68ap), Skyworks 77413 - UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz, Skyworks 77414 - UMTS / HSDPA 1900, Skyworks 77427 - UMTS / HSDPA tx 1900, rx 2100MHz, ARM 1176JZF-S - Main CPU (same as in 1st gen iPhone), Sony SP9T - antenna Switch for GSM / UMTS dual mode, Murata LMRX3JCA-479 tri-band amplifier (we’re assuming for the 3G) and Infineon PMB6952 / S-GOLD3 six-band UMTS / HSDPA transceiver.

If this so called “reliable source” is right then it shows much of what we have already guessed from other information, support for 3G and GPS. This may all be confirmed on this Monday at the WWDC keynote speech.

Current Apple iPhone Owners: dumping for 3G versions

Monday, April 28th, 2008

As a currently Apple iPhone owner it did make me a bit jealous that the hard drive was increased from the 8GB that I have, but then we all know the 3G iPhone is out this year and its said to be sooner rather than later. Now this new version will have many extras but as a current owner should the first generation iPhone be dumped for the new 3G and improved version.

You will be lucky to find 8GB iPhones in local stores as they are all clearing stock ready for the 3G phone, also we have heard that specs have been leaked from a “trusted source” of Engadget’s. This leaked information has the 3G iPhone sporting GPS and that is a massive improvement on the first iPhone, as you can see in the photo below it looks like the 3G phone will also have a glossy black finish and chrome volume buttons, more rounded edges and a flush headphone jack.

While we are talking rumors, let us add that pocket lint are reporting today that the next-gen iPhone may also feature haptic touch technology. It’s a shame we do not have any information on the storage, camera, battery life or weight. It’s safe to say that the camera will be increased as the current 2 megapixels is a bit weak, it would be nice to see that increased to 5 megapixels. Personally I would imagine that I would be upgrading to the new 3G iPhone, as GPS would be a nice feature, also the better camera and more than 8GB storage.

Would you dump your current iPhone for the 3G version if it has the above features?

Telstra to launch 3G Apple iPhone in Australia this June

Monday, April 21st, 2008

It does seem funny that just last year Greg Winn who is one of the top guys at Telstra the Australian telecommunications company said that Apple could stick their iPhone. Well now it seems that the company has had a change of heart as the Australian release of the iPhone will be this June and looks as though it could be the 3G version of the handset.

Although Telstra is the largest phone provider in OZ, it seems as if they will not be the only ones to get the Apple iPhone. It was way back in February last year that Winn said “Apple is not a mobile phone manufacturer, that’s not their knitting.”

Greg who is the second in charge over at Telstra said that other top phone makers like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson would be launching their own handsets that will rival the of the Apple iPhone. However, it now seems as if Winn has had to eat his words and back track on what he said, maybe it has something to do with what the consumers want.

So how has the information leaked that Telstra will be distributing the 3G Apple iPhone, well that is simple it seems as if a staff member at a Telstra customer service call center told some caller that they would be stocking this handset.

3G Apple iPhone Upcoming SGOLD3 Chip Found: May include HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, 5MP Cam and more

3G Apple iPhone Upcoming SGOLD3 Chip Found
We all know that the Apple iPhone is one of the best products to hit the market and with applications coming out left right and centre we also know that the iPhone will be around for quite sometime without us getting bored of it.

Well the latest news and of course with the iPhone SDK Beta 3 just recently out Zibri the makers of the ZiPhone iPhone tool have found some references to a future 3G chip inside the new firmware.

The chipset is called the SGOLD3 which you can see clearly in the image above, obviously a follow up to the current S-GOLD2 in today’s iPhone, if this chip does make it into the Apple iPhone it will have these features cameras up to 5MP, HSDPA category 8 7.2 Mbps, video telephony, recording and playback, MPEG4/H.263 hardware acceleration and streaming.

Please remember though Apple may not enable all of these features in the actual Apple 3G iPhone, and if they do not enable these features they are just mad.

Spy Shot of the 3G Apple iPhone?

Monday, April 7th, 2008

With just under 60 days to go until the rumored release of the 3G Apple iPhone, many people have wondered if this handset will look any different. Well here is a so called spy shot of the new 3G Apple iPhone. The upgraded handset looks as if it will be getting a new glossy black cover.

The back cover will no longer feature the satin nickel look and will also lose the black plastic end piece, which covers the antenna. It is thought that the new 3G iPhone will still come as an 8GB, however many are hoping that it will come with Photoshop pre-installed.

Samsung Instinct with 3G: will it smash the Apple iPhone?

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Samsung Instinct with 3G
This is the Samsung Instinct, which also sports 3G, now first up I would like to point out I own an Apple iPhone and think it’s amazing and beats all phones before it. Today I have had a good look at the Samsung Instinct and it shows me that the iPhone will be beaten as Apple is not the only brand that can produce such a phone. The Instinct is stunning as you can see in the photos on this page, but it also features some amazing specs including some that the iPhone lacks.

Sprint’s Samsung Instinct features a 3.1-inch touchscreen, Voice Command, Live TV, three hard navigation keys, localized haptic feedback, EV-DO Rev A and GPS, Sprint Music Store, a full HTML web browser and Visual Voicemail. The customizable homescreen seems to be much better than the iPhone’s and you get a lot of extras as standard in the $100 monthly subscription fee.

Watch the Samsung Instinct video below.
