Update: Research In Motion vs Apple 3G iPhone

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Two weeks before the new Apple (AAPL) 3G iPhone was released, a ChangeWave consumer survey showed it was likely to have a tsunami-like impact on the smart phone market. But what does that mean for current market share leader Research In Motion (RIMM)?

The ChangeWave consumer survey showed the 3G iPhone catapulting Apple into the lead in terms of planned consumer smart phone purchases for the next 90 days. Note that RIM remains the leader among current smart phone owners in the consumer market, and RIM holds a huge lead in the corporate market.

Yet despite its current lead in both markets, RIM isn’t taking the Apple 3G challenge lying down. The Canadian manufacturer has multiple plans in motion to counter Apple’s momentum among consumers, including an already announced new product release (the Bold) and two likely additional product releases (the Thunder and Kickstart).

To get a sense of the market potential for RIM’s new smart phone arsenal, ChangeWave surveyed 3,567 consumers on their reaction to the new RIM counteroffensive. The survey was conducted in the aftermath of the Apple 3G announcement (June 17-23), but before the new iPhone model was released.

Preparing For Multiple Battles - Consumer respondents were presented a brief description containing key features of RIM’s new smart phone models, along with a follow-up question asking them how likely they were to buy each model if and when it becomes available.

The survey found the new RIM releases each showing considerable potential among consumers once they actually get into the marketplace.

A total of 4% of respondents report they’re Very Likely to buy the new RIM/BlackBerry Bold when it becomes available. Another 13% are Somewhat Likely.

Slightly less positive but nonetheless significant, 2% of respondents say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Thunder when available. A total of 13% are Somewhat Likely.
Another 2% say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Kickstart when it becomes available, and 11% are Somewhat Likely.

“These results show consumers hungry for all varieties of BlackBerry,” said Tobin Smith, founder of ChangeWave Research and editor of ChangeWave Investing, who added, “it appears like when it comes to the BlackBerry, the adage ‘if you build it, they will come,’ certainly holds true.”

The strength of these early survey results on the demand for RIM’s new products points to a potentially powerful counteroffensive to Apple’s 3G iPhone, according to Smith. “The real losers in this smart phone battle will most likely be the second-tier players, who could find themselves increasingly pushed to the sidelines as the two Goliaths battle for market dominance.”

To find out which manufacturers are most at risk because of the RIM counteroffensive, ChangeWave looked at the impact of the new RIM releases on the rest of the smart phone industry.

The survey found that current RIM customers are two-to-three times more likely to buy the new RIM models than the customers of other manufacturers. The survey also found that the new RIM releases have a significant potential to lure away customers from other manufacturers – with Palm (PALM), Motorola (MOT) and Samsung the most vulnerable.

Apple customers, on the other hand, appear least likely to buy any of the new RIM phones.

Alert Sound Issue: 3G iPhone with 2.0 firmware update

3G iPhone 2.0 firmware issues
It seems that another issue has been found with iPhone 3G’s and first generation Apple iPhones that have updated to firmware 2.0, the Apple discussions area is alive with people confirming they have the same problem as the person that raised the question.

Its to-do with the text-message alert sound going away at certain times after getting the iPhone software 2.0 update. The information below is what one person said their issue was.

I got the iPhone 3G over the weekend, and I’ve noticed that my text-message alert sounds kind of go away. The phone will vibrate, but the alerts don’t sound off.

Before you say anything, yes the phone is on Loud (it’s not on Vibrate), Yes my text message alerts are enabled in settings, and Yes I’ve double checked.

So far the only way I’ve been able to fix this is to restart the phone. Which can get really annoying when you do it over and over.

I THINK that it’s caused by the headphones. I’ve noticed that the text alerts work, but when I plug in the headphones and then unplug them the sounds stop working.

The first problem we found with the iPhone 2.0 software was lag, although this may be tied with applications keeping memory and not releasing it, we still need this fixed.

AT&T 8GB 3G iPhone $199 new customers or $399 existing

ATT Reveals 3G iPhone Prices
My iPhone will not be the only one that’s been getting text messages explaining Apple will contact me with details of updating soon for the July 11 launch but in the last few moments today, AT&T have revealed the 3G iPhone prices. This new price information may upset some existing AT&T customers.

First of all things look straightforward with the 8GB iPhone 3G costing $199 and 16GB for $399 if customers sign up for a two-year contract, but then you find out that this price is for “new customers and current iPhone owners”. Now what about the many existing AT&T customers that don’t own an iPhone and as such are not eligible for upgrade discounts?

These existing AT&T customers will be charged $399 for the same device that costs $199 to the others; surely this will not make some people happy. The 16GB version will cost these customers $499. Today also saw AT&T reveal voice and data plans.

The contract-free option that many phone buyers use is not yet available for the iPhone 3G, although AT&T said they will be offering this no contract option in the future. The price will be $699 for the 16GB 3G iPhone and $599 for the 8GB version. If you are a current AT&T customer that wants to upgrade to the new iPhone then you will be charged an $18 upgrade fee.

All new customers will pay the standard activation fee; we believe this is around $36. The price plans will be the same as AT&T Nation plans; these include a combination of unlimited data transfer and free minutes. The unlimited plan will cost $129.99 a month and the cheapest plan available costs $69.99 per month for 5,000 night and weekend minutes, and with 450 anytime minutes.

Apple iPhone 3G 8GB £299.99 on O2 PAYG

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

On July 11 people will be queuing up outside their local O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK, just so that can get their hands on the new Apple iPhone 3G. We all know about the different price plans for their monthly contracts, but now we can give you the pricing details of the Pay and Go (PAYG) pre-paid option. As yet there are no details on the O2 website, but those guys over at Phones Review have managed to get all the price details.

Ok so the Apple iPhone 3G 8GB version will cost just £299.99, while the 16GB version will set you back £359.99. That is just £60 more for double the storage, which sounds like a great deal to me. When you purchase the latest iPhone on Pay & Go, the handset will come with 6 months of unlimited WiFi hotspot access as well as web browsing. Once you have gone through the 6 months period, it is thought that you will have to pay £10 per month for an unlimited data package.

This does seem like a great option for those who just can’t afford to sign up to an 18-month contract, it seems that O2 are doing all they can to get the sale of the new 3G Apple iPhone of to a great start. We can’t be certain how accurate these pricing details are, but once we have conformation we will let you know.

I think that having the new iPhone on O2’s Pay & Go service will be one of the best services they could provide, this will now open up the option of owning the ultimate handset to thousands more people.

Foolproof iPhone Software v2.0: more secure data wipe function

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

It seems that more and more iPhone users have concerns over Apple’s data reset methods on their handset, but the computer giant have now taken some extra steps for a more secure data wipe function, this will be integrated into iPhone Software v2.0. Most people are familiar with the beta version of this software, and Apple say that the new full version of iPhone Software v2.0 will use a more foolproof method of erasing all of your personal data and settings from the handset.

This function is accessible just like the previous version, just select Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents and Settings. The main difference with the new version over the old iPhone software is how the function will wipe all data, much like the “Secure Empty Trash” function which is used on Mac OS X. Once this is done all data will be deleted, unlinked and then overwritten many times, this will then make it irretrievable by some of the best recovery tools on the market today.

As with all good things there is always a downside, if you have an 8GB Apple iPhone it will take longer to complete the wipe, about an hour in fact. A progress bar will appear on the screen to tell you how things are going. Just to give you a bit of advice, as the wipe takes some time to complete, make sure that you plug your iPhone in to the mains; this is because the new software is CPU intensive.

This new update comes after an Oregon State detective was able to successfully retrieve personal data from a refurbished iPhone sold by Apple. The detective was able to retrieve such files as emails, photos and financial information. Let us hope that iPhone Software v2.0 rectifies this security flaw.

7 reasons not to buy a new 3G iPhone

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

new 3G iPhone
Everyone has reasons not to buy a product and also why to buy one, we look at one persons seven reasons not to buy the new Apple iPhone 3G and to help you see why you may or may not want to get the next version. Have a read of Chad W Smith’s reasons why he won’t be buying a new iPhone and let us know if you agree.

The 2-year contract - I’ve never had a 2-year contract in my life. For anything. My college was semester to semester. Heck, my marriage didn’t last a year. Being locked into a $30 data plan + whatever the calling plan is - per month - for the next 24 months. You realize that is over $700 - *just for the data plan!* - and that’s not counting the $199 for the phone itself. In the end, it will cost more than $1000 for the iPhone. To put that in perspective - I pay $10 a month for my phone now. The data plan alone - (keep in mind, there’s a voice plan to be added here too) - would cost me almost $500 more over the next two years. And, right now, I can cancel at any time with no ETF.

There are better phones. That’s right, you heard me. There are *BETTER* phones. The key word being “PHONE”. The iPhone is this weird jack-of-all-trades / master-of-none device. It’s not a very good phone. I don’t want a slippery phone. I don’t want a smudgable phone. I don’t want a phone that I can’t blind-dial. I don’t want a phone that I can’t swap the battery out of. I don’t want a phone I can’t swap the SIM out of. I don’t want a $200 phone that can’t voice dial. Then there’s the lack of MMS, the lack of external storage, the lack of copy and paste for crying out loud… It’s not a very good phone.

There are better pocketable Internet devices. The Nokia Internet Tablets kick the iPhone’s ass when it comes to pocketable Internet. Let me prove it in one word. FLASH. Yeah. Real desktop Flash - on a device that has a much higher resolution screen, with a physical keyboard. I owned an N800 for almost a year, and it rarely was far away from me. And that model didn’t have a keyboard. But it did have an 800 x 480 screen, a real AJAX/Flash capable browser, (there was never a site I couldn’t use/view on my N800 - and I use Google Docs, Blogger, and YouTube a lot). Tons of open source software (that didn’t have to be approved by Steve Jobs, or anyone else - other than ME, to work on MY device). It did USB in and out - Bluetooth, FM radio, a much faster processor, and 2 SD slots… The newer models have all that, plus GPS, plus a physical keyboard. And the new Pandora (the reason I don’t have my N800 anymore) will be even more powerful processor, game controls, and the convenient no-in-pocket-accidental dialing clamshell design.

There are better media players. The iPod Touch comes to mind. It doesn’t have a monthly fee. But there are also things like the N8×0 series I was talking about. Or the Archos PMPs. Something with removable storage, something with a bigger screen, something that can play anything. But, seriously, if you just want the iPhone for its media potential - get the iPod Touch. You’ll pay more upfront (now) - but that’s all you’ll pay. Plus, it’s thinner, and you can get more storage. Plus, you can afford to buy a descent phone to go with it.

There are better smartphones. Ok - you want an all-in-one. You don’t want a phone and an Internet device. Get a BlackJack II. Get a BlackBerry. Get an EnV. Get something that will work as a modem. (I really can’t believe the 3G iPhone still won’t let you Bluetooth pair with another device for Wireless Internet. I should be able to pair the iPhone up with my MacBook and go online.) Get something that will copy & paste - (that is insane - that’s GUI 101 - that’s features the most basic computers back in the 1980s had). Get something that can open Office documents and PDFs! Get something with a physical keyboard.

There are better media phones. This might be harder to prove. But that’s just because I’m not a big media phone guy. But to me, external storage is a given. To me, video recording is a given. To me, a decent camera is a given. To me, MMS is a given.

There are better GPS devices. Like say, um, any dedicated GPS device. And many GPS enabled phones. Voice recognition is pretty key here. Being big enough to see while mounted in a car is too.

The 3G iPhone may not be perfect, I will certainly be upgrading but not everyone feels the same. Do you relate to Chad’s reasons?

Steve Jobs delivers 3G iPhone: Porn sites & Hugh Hefner’s Playboy cash in

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Steve Jobs delivers 3G iPhone
When we first had the war between Betamax and VHS, it was the porn business that backed VHS and helped it win that war years ago. Now that Steve Jobs has delivered the 3G iPhone and with the promise of much faster data speeds, Apple is surely to sell many more iPhones and they will not be the only one making money from the 3G iPhone.

The porn sites will want their share of money from the iPhone and more specifically the 3G versions thanks to better video playback over the 3G networks. In 2007 we heard about iPlayboy and how Hugh Hefner wanted to cash in on the Apple iPhone success with some software that was downloadable from Playboy.com and included a Playboy Cyber Girl video, Playmate photos, wallpapers and other stuff customized for the Apple iPhone.

Now in 2008 with the 3G iPhone coming to 22 countries on July 11, the current trend is showing a sharp increase this year for iPhone porn and the mobile porn businesses know this and are aiming to fill that need. With Google earlier this year revealing the iPhone as the most popular phone using Google, the iPhone is one mobile device that can bring massive money streams to porn businesses and also one fact that Apple is happy to keep quiet about for obvious reasons.

Phones Review reports about a story from Time and they said that the “Leading porn purveyors see the iPhone as a dream come true” and they couldn’t be more right. Apple is trying to help stop this use of their phone, An Apple spokesperson said that they do not condone porn distribution; they also said that all official iPhone applications will have any adult content banned.

The truth is if someone wants to use the iPhones Safari web browser to view adult content, Apple cannot stop them. What’s your view about the mobile porn business and its affect on the iPhone?

Google Android handsets pushed back to fourth quarter

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

No matter where we turn, the entire world seems to be interested about is the latest 3G Apple iPhone, but there is also another cell phone due out that could get as much or maybe even more attention. The handset in question is the Google Android powered handset, and the Wall Street Journal has been running a story about how the phone had to be pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2008.

Initially Google had planned to launch the cell phone in the second part of the year however; a number of delays have put it back to later in the year. A number of partners working on these Android handsets with Google have different launch dates. T-Mobile hopes to be able to deliver their version in the fourth period, while Sprint Nextel has said that they will not be able to have their version out this year. China Mobile is yet another partner who will have to delay their launch until some time in 2009.

There are a number of companies involved with the development of the Google Android phone; these include HTC, Intel, Motorola as well as T-Mobile, nVIDIA and Qualcomm. All of these companies have one sole purpose, and this is to develop open standards for mobile devices. Having Google working with these phone companies will be great for the user, the search engine giant hope to boost the quality of Web browsing, to do this they are enhancing the audio and video experience for mobile phones.

Andy Rubin, director of mobile platforms at Google, has been explaining that managing the software-development effort, as well as giving the partners the option for new features takes time, he said that “This is where the pain happens,” he also added that “We are very, very close.”

Will Steve Jobs allow a download of Firefox 3 on the 3G iPhone?

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

firefox 3 on 3g iphone
It was many months ago now that I moved to Mozilla Firefox on Windows from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, now days I work on an Apple Mac computer and although I find Safari better than IE it still lacked the add-on applications that you can get with Firefox. Now in the mobile phone world the Apple iPhone is ruling with its ability to browse the web almost like a desktop computer, I have had an iPhone since its release and often browse the web while walking down the street. Come July 11th, the 3G iPhone will be in my pocket.

Will Steve Jobs allow a download of Firefox 3 on the 3G iPhone?

As we reported earlier, Firefox 3 has been released today and I am now using that updated version of Firefox and loving it. Although Safari does a great job on the iPhone, I know that thousands of iPhone owners will want Firefox on the iPhone for the add-on applications that could be developed and as the iPhone is like no other phone for third party apps, surely Steve Jobs will Officially open up the option for an iPhone Firefox download.

The mobile space needs more phones supporting Firefox and even more so the iPhone, if we had to guess then we should reach a point in the future when Jobs will have to make Firefox available on the iPhone as it will never be able to afford to be seen as lagging in the mobile browsing arena. Although that’s assuming that Firefox can get to a point that they give a better mobile browsing experience than the mobile version of Safari.

Do you think a mobile Firefox could do a better job than the current version of mobile Safari and would you want Firefox on the upcoming iPhone 3G?

Get the 3G iPhone: What happens to old Apple iPhone?

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Like many other iPhone owners, I am in one of the 22 countries that will get the 3G iPhone on July 11th and like many other iPhone owners I will be getting the new 3G iPhone. When I first thought about upgrading I thought we would be trading in our first generation Apple iPhone for the new 3G iPhone but I have not seen anywhere say that you have to do this.

The information so far states that you pay $199 to AT&T (£99 on O2 in the UK) for the new 8GB 3G iPhone and you also have to start a new contract. There is no information about your old iPhone, so I am guessing you get to keep this.

If you are getting the new 3G iPhone, then what will you do with your old Apple iPhone?

This has got to be a question a lot of iPhone owners have asked themselves, and if you look online you can see that a lot of people have unlocked their first generation iPhones and if this is the case, will we see many first generation iPhones being handed to friends and family who then put different networks on them.

The iPhone 2.0 may be 2mm thicker but its also lighter, got GPS and much faster 3G. The new phone also costs less than what we paid when the first iPhone was released and the next firmware that’s due mid July will include a lot of upgrades to enhance all iPhones. Sadly the 3G iPhone still has just a 2-megapixel camera, which in this day and age is a little poor.

Let us know what you plan to do with your old iPhone when upgrading or are they really going to take them from us (that’s unlikely).
